Scoring My First Plays
- Already to go - Umpire has called "Play!"
- Let's assume you are not going to be keeping any batting or fielding stats -- yet.
but keep in mind that:
- It is not difficult to keep stats as you score.
- You can start by trying to record just a few - such as "At Bats" and "Strike Outs" for batters.
- On one game you might concentrate on keeping accurate pitch count -
balls and strikes for each pitcher
- Then contact SABSA for further training!
- However, you do have to keep track of:
- who participated
- how many runs were scored
- and how many outs are made
- 1st Batter
- Double check it is the correct batter
- If you do not recognise the batter - ask you fellow scorer
- If there are Uniform numbers - use them!
- In desperation, just hope that the coach got the names and order correct???
- If keeping track of pitches:
- 'dot' (.) for a ball
- 'C' for called strike by the Umpire
- 'S' for swinging strike
- 'F' for foul
- It is not necessary to put an 'H' for hit
because the code in the first square will tell you the result of a 'hit'
- Record in the first square what happened to the batter.
- If batter gets a SAFE HIT
- Put the appropriate symbol in the first square
- For example a 2 base hit to centre field would be scored like this:
- If batter is OUT
- Put the appropriate symbol in the first square
- For example, batter out with a Line Drive to Third Base
Note that this is the 1st out and the batter had 2 balls and a foul before the final pitch
- Runners and Subsequent Batters
- Move the runner on base on the batter's action
- For example, batter 1 gets a single to centre field and batter 2 walks
Move batter 1 (the runner on 1st) to second base on the play of batter "2"
Note the pitch count is 2 balls 2 strike for the first batter
(Hits are counted as strikes and the last pitch must have been a hit.)
and 4 balls and 1 strike for batter 2 for a combined '6 balls and 3 strike' count
(Note that last 'ball' s not recorded as the BB indicates the last pitch must have been a ball.)
- Then just keep on scoring the rest of the batters and runners!
- After the last out, rule off the end of the innings to indicate where the next innings starts.
Below, batter 6 is the 3rd out in the 1st Innings.
Draw a diagonal orange line through the following batters box
to the top of the batters box for the first batter in the 2nd Innings.
