Starting Step-by-Step
My First Game
- Thank the coach for the opportunity to score - just what you have always wanted!
- Find a pencil ... and
- the scorebook
- an erasure
- the Official Rules Book
(Have I mentioned that the Official Rule Book is available from SABSA?)
- ruler or straight edge
- pencil sharpner
- Scoring Symbols Legend
- drink bottle
( by the way, our Code of Conduct forbides alcohol, smoking or swearing while scoring.)
- In the future just carry your scoring bag with this equipment
- Find the Team Sheets - for both teams
- Fill in games details - date, team names, venue, umpires, scorers, etc.
- Write up Batting Line-ups
- Away team (visitors) ALWAYS on the top page - they bat first
- Home team ALWAYS on the bottom page - they bat second
(If the coach asks for it the other way round, be gentle, but say no.)
- Be sure the Pitcher's name appears at least twice.
- Be sure the Catcher's name appears twice.
- Start watching the clock, because you are probably already late getting started!
- Now you should be near the scoring box or table or at least a comfortable seat (if proper facilities are not available.)
- If a hardcopy results sheet is required, start filling it in now.
- And by now you have introduced yourself to your fellow scorer..... they have arrived, haven't they?
- When the Umpire calls. "PLAY" note the time - this is the official start time.
(Again, if it is suggested you just write down the 'scheduled' start time, nod politely and write down the correct start time.
We are charged with recording the game accurately, not how it 'should' appear.)
OK! Now we are ready to start Scoring My First Play!
